Grade 2

Academics

Reading

Throughout the year we read books and stories to children and encourage them to read independently.  We work on identifying character, setting, problem, and solution and talk about the the sequence of events.  We point out important vocabulary and answer questions about the story.  We work on summarizing stories and talk about meaning.  As the the year progresses we introduce additional vocabulary terms and try to predict the outcome of  different stories.  We talk about topic and main idea when reading and pick out important details to help in the understanding the story.   Our goal is always to make reading a fun activity!

Daily Oral Language

We learn how to use capitalization and punctuation along with identifying parts of speech, sentence structure, and spelling.  Written as well as oral activities help us learn to answer in complete sentences and understand sentence structure.

Themes

Over the course of the year we focus on many different themes.   They are Family, Special Needs, Friends, Reptiles, Creepy Crawlies, Native Americans, Neighborhoods, Mapping, Penguins, Under the Sea, Whales, Water Cycle, Dental Health, Dinosaurs, Pigs, Nutrition, Environment, Space, Plants, Fairy Tales, Folk Tales, and Fables.  We do many different projects and have fun learning incorporating these themes into our classroom activities.

Math

Second graders learn and reinforce patterns seen in numbers, shapes, and groups.  We look at number relationships and numbers in time and place. We master how to count up and count back. We look how to use numbers in sequence, measurement, addition, subtraction, and how important place value is.  The concepts of time and money are also a fun part of  second grade math during the year.  Learning 2 and 3 digit addition and subtraction is introduced and solving story problems using this formulas is practiced. We also look at basic multiplication and division properties. While building a strong foundation for math skills we show the children how math is incorporated into so many areas of learning and can be fun.
